'A Conversation With...Salt Ashes'

I caught up with London-based, Brighton born singer Salt Ashes aka Veiga Sanchez to discuss their brand new single 'Love, Love'. In this conversation I asked the singer about the recording process behind the single and how the pandemic has affected their creative process when it comes to writing new music.

Hi Salt Ashes, how are you?

I’m pretty good thanks.

I interviewed you back in October 2020 when you were releasing your single ‘Cut You With A Kiss’ and you are now releasing your brand-new single ‘Love, Love’ taken from your upcoming album. What can you tell us about the new single and how would you say it differs from your previous work?

I wrote this song back in 2017 with a friend and producer called Toby Horton and we never quite finished it until recently when I dug it back up. It’s definitely a side step from the last few singles as I feel it could sit alongside more UK dance anthems.

You have described ‘Love, Love’ as a hymn about unrequited love, what do you hope your listeners take away from the song?

I just want people who are feeling what I was feeling to be heard. And it if pushes someone to not be as confused as I was then, winning.

As previously mentioned, the single is set to feature on your highly anticipated upcoming second album. What can you tell us about the recording process and inspiration behind the tracks set to feature on the album?

Most of the album was written and recorded during lockdown so it’s really my lockdown baby. I decided to be less pedantic with my writing process and just write whatever comes out. Less pressure meant better songs (I think). It’s certainly the most raw material I’ve written and my producer, Louis Souyave, and I have become sick of each other now for spending too long together.

Did the pandemic affect your creative process when it came to recording/writing new material?

To begin with I was so uninspired. I think I was actually enjoying the pause on the world and the lack of pressure I felt to produce anything. But eventually I felt that urge again. Mostly, I think it’s just pushed me to not care too much if something isn’t good… finish it and then move on from it if you don’t like it.

If you could describe your current sound in three words, what would they be?

Unapologetic. 80’s synth.Ballsy.

Do you have any plans for the rest of 2021?

I have a music video coming out for the new single on the 19th Aug which I directed myself and then the album will be out later this year.

What advice would you give to someone who may be interested in pursuing a career in music?

Do shit the way you want to do it.

What is the best advice you have received?

Respect yourself and others will too.
