Sam Seccombe is a singer/songwriter based in the UK. In this conversation, Sam tells us about the artists who have influenced his music and shares some advice to anyone who wants to pursue a career in the music industry.
Hi Sam, tell us a bit about yourself!
I've been making music in my bedroom for about 4 years now, after being inspired by Tom Misch to follow the home-produced music motive. The stuff I write is mostly driven by guitar, just because I'll tend to write the song and jump straight to my desk to record it and put a proper track together.
Do you have any artists who have particularly influenced your sound?
John Mayer is undoubtedly a huge influence. I've been listening to his stuff ever since I picked up the guitar at 11 years old, and even to this day, it's always in the back of my mind when I'm making music.
I'm also into my choral stuff, so Take 6/Jacob Collier and even Queen has sneaked into my music.
How would you describe your music?
My songs are narrative of whatever is going on in my life at a given moment, so listening to it is a great way to get to know me! It's laid-back, homegrown music that sounds warm and calm even if the subject isn't sometimes.
What are you currently working on?
I'm currently wrapping up a 5 or 6 track EP - 3 of the tracks are already out so I'm keen to get these others done and dusted!
"you should make sure you're always loving what you're doing."
Would you say that lockdown has affected your creative process when it comes to writing and recording music?
It hasn't affected me as much as I've heard it has for other artists who might rely on studio time to get tracks done, but I'm definitely missing live music big time. Even just the odd open mic in front of a boozed-up crowd feels a long way away right now. The whole thing has made me want to put more into my online presence though which should be beneficial for sure.
What advice would you give to someone who may want to start a career in the music industry?
Good question! I wish I had more to say on this - I'm certainly far from an experienced expert. But I'd say that you should make sure you're always loving what you're doing. It'll benefit you of course but it'll also mean people warm to you and you'll end up sinking into the right places at the right times.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
One thing that's playing on my mind recently is "be in control of not being in control", told to me by a close friend of mine in the depths of a DMC. It's a vague one for sure but I like what it says to me at least. Everyone loves to be in control but sometimes the best stuff happens when you don't force it and you just let things fall into place around you.
