'A Conversation With...We Wander'

We Wander are a folk-indie band from Mississauga, Canada. In this conversation, the band discuss their recent single Pouring Out and the writing process behind the song as well as sharing the best advice they have ever received.

Hi We Wander, tell us a bit about yourself!

Thanks so much for having us! We are a band called We Wander from Mississauga, Canada. Our genre is a mix of Indie-Folk/ Alternative. We’re a big advocate for mental health, and love to help people through our music.

My name is Maddy Little (singer-songwriter and acoustic guitar player), with me, is Jacob Rondeau (Drummer) and Camilo Martinez Bass player).

Originally, it started with just me writing songs and playing solo shows. Eventually, I got asked to play a show in Toronto and decided to add some members, from there it grew into who we are today.

What made you decide to form a band and pursue music?

I think for all of us, music has been a part of our lives, in every aspect.

Our end goal with pursuing music is for our songs to help others who may be going through a hard time, and being able to help them cope with our lyrics.

Are there any artists who you consider having influenced your music?

I think our sound is so different because we have different genres we all like. Jacob is into Metal, Camilo is into Pop Punk and I am into Indie/folk.

So there is a lot of inspiration that drives us.

How would you describe your sound?

Our sound is hard to put a finger on sometimes. The Violin can make it sound kind of Country sometimes, where the bass and drums can have a little punch, and the vocals can sound very Folk. So we like to describe ourselves as Indie Folk / Alternative

Your new single Pouring Out is a beautiful folk song featuring violin and dreamy melodies. How did you come up with the idea for this song?

This song is a very special song for us because this was the first song we were able to write together. Just one day in rehearsal we sat down and it just came out of us!

Does your band have a writing process when it comes to writing new material, or do you work together and share ideas?

Usually, it starts with me writing the lyrics and chords for the song and then I bring it back to the band and we work from there.

What has been your experience of being a musician during the current pandemic?

I think it’s the same everywhere, everyone wants to get out and play and that just can’t happen right now. There is a lot of alternatives like live streams and drive in concerts, that we are super thankful for and hope for things to go back to normal soon.

Are there any plans to release a music video for Pouring Out?

We do have a teaser video coming out that we shot with our friend Shawn Lovering, and his company Wild & Light.

Are there any Canadian artists you want to shout out?

We would love to take a second to shout out our favourite band Dizzy and not necessarily an artist but again Wild & Light for their amazing work in film.

What advice would you give to someone who may want to start a career in the music industry?

Be patient, have fun, and not everything has to be so serious.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?

If you spend your time trying to be different, you’re taking away from your creativity, so just be yourself and don’t change for anyone.
