'Blue' by Denim Blu (album review)

'Blue' is a beautiful ballad that sets the tone for the rest of the album. The gentle percussion alongside the reverbed piano chords creates an atmospheric backdrop for the main vocals that soar and convey feelings of hopelessness. The following track, 'Extraordinary Feel', was released as a lead single and features the powerful vocals of Lizzy Clarke. It is an upbeat song that nicely leads into 'Burn' feat randy, a dark-electro pop track that is bold and captures the sensuality of the lyrics. 'I Miss You' feat Eugene Hwang followed by 'I Miss You (Reprise)' leans towards a heavier Rnb influence, with sultry vocals and warm production that immerses the listener in the lyrics that long for the company of a lover.

'Young and Foolish' features a string section and steady piano accompaniment, focusing heavily on the narrative of the persona. The lyrics are laid bare for the listener, with the minimal instrumentation painting colourful visuals of someone reflecting on the memories of their past love.

A highlight from the album is 'I'll Die' another brilliant collaboration with Lizzy Clarke, who provides vocals in the verse and chorus. This song is mysterious and dark, giving an almost cinematic mood that could feature in a soundtrack for a spy thriller. There is also an acoustic version that closes the album. Similarly, 'Again' is a powerful ballad that explores introspective themes, with Denim Blu's honest lyricism making this a track that will resonate with many.

Overall, 'Blue' is an album filled with different perspectives and themes but captures an individual processing love, heartbreak and recovery. It is a beautiful album featuring unique and diverse collaborations, making this a meaningful and progressive body of work.
