Do you want to get your music to reach a wider audience? Or are you struggling getting your music heard by blogs? Here are some of my tips to help you contact bloggers and get your music featured!
1. Provide Information about you and your music
Before contacting a blog, make sure to have an EPK ready to include as an attachment to your email. This is like your musical CV, so make sure to include photos, background information about your music/discography and links to your socials so that bloggers can read and learn more about you and your work.
2. Do Your Research
Check out what type of music the blogger frequently shares on their blog. Do they predominantly share pop/rock/alternative music? Does your music reflect the type of content they are sharing? By doing some preliminarily research, you can be more systematic about which blogs to contact, increasing the chance of being successful with your submissions.
3. Introduce yourself!
It is important to say hello and introduce yourself as this adds a personal touch to your submissions. It is important to make a good first impression, this includes checking your grammar and spelling (eg. spell the blogger's name correctly and double check who you are emailing.) Most importantly, bloggers want to know more about you as this helps us get an idea of who you are and what drives your passion for music.
4. Don't be afraid to brag!
We want to know about your achievements however big or small. I find that some submissions I receive contain very little information unless I do background research into the artist's discography. Don't be afraid to brag a little as this helps us when writing your feature plus we want to hear about your achievements!
5. Be patient
Some blogs are not funded and do not charge for submissions; this means they are creating content purely to support artists and to share their love for music. Bloggers may have other commitments, so be patient when waiting for a response. It's most likely that their inbox is full or your submission is lost in another folder so it will take some time to reply. If you don't hear from them after a week or so, then send them a polite follow-up email or message them via another platform.
6. Timing is important!
This follows on from the previous point, but send your submission as early as possible. This gives blogs time to process their submissions and plan features. Most bloggers will work to a schedule so if you want your music to reach a wider audience, make sure to send your submission well in advance of the release date.
7. Share, Like and Comment!
Share, like and comment on the final content/feature! Once your music has been featured on a blog, it is really important to share it and promote it on your account. Not only will this help you reach a wider audience, but it shows your appreciation for the feature making it more likely that the blogger will want to collaborate with you in the future.
8. Keep in touch!
Make sure to keep in touch with those blogs that have featured your music, as we want to continue supporting your music!
9. Recommend blogs to other musicians
If you know other musicians who create similar music, then it might be helpful to inform them of blogs who share or recommend their genre of music.
10. Don't be afraid to contact blogs!
If you are a new artist and haven't released a lot of material, do not feel discouraged from contacting blogs. I personally like to share and support music from artists who are at the beginning of their musical career, so don't hesitate to message a blog and ask for a feature whether its a review, interview or playlist add!
I hope these tips have been useful and will help in getting your music featured!
Remember: some blogs and pages may charge a fee to be featured so double check before you agree to be featured. And seek support from other musicians to see which blogs/pages they would recommend. For more information feel free to message me @conversationswithkeiko or @keiko.terry
