'May' by Lupin

I have been a fan of Hippo Campus for many years so I was surprised and excited to hear that the band's frontman, Jake Luppen is releasing his first solo debut album later this month via Grand Jury/Transgressive.

When listening to 'May' for the first time, you notice that this is an experimental record with lyrics that are a testament to Luppen's talent as a songwriter. The use of distorted synths is reminiscent of the latest Hippo Campus album that experimented sonically with tracks like 'Why Even Try' and 'Golden'. Luppen's vocals are a strong component to the track, his falsetto range adding a contrasting tone to the layered electronic sounds, adding groove to the sombre lyrics. One thing that differs between 'May' and Luppen's songs for Hippo Campus is that the lyrics feel a lot more confrontational and personal.

This album was written in between touring with Hippo Campus and features collaborations with a range of talented producers and musicians, including BJ Burton (producer for Banks, Charli XCX, etc...). Burton's influence on the record compliments Luppen's dynamic melodies and vocals, bringing a bright funk-pop rhythm to the overall sound.

'May' is a great lead single from the Hippo Campus lead singer and I look forward to hearing the album later on this month.

If you liked 'May' I would strongly recommend checking out Lupin's other songs!
