'MISS REGENT' by Maddie Regent (EP Review)

'MISS REGENT' is the debut EP from Maddie Regent, a singer-songwriter based in Toronto/New York. The EP features five tracks showcasing a variety of sounds and themes that encapsulate Regent's indie-pop style.

The opening track 'Salt' has an 80s inspired instrumentation with reverbed percussion and a single vocal line that ensnares the listener's attention as we begin this five-track EP. Regent's lyricism is honest and reflects an individual who encounters the stages of grief, acceptance and recovery. 'Our House' stylistically continues the synth-pop melodies of 'Salt' with warm, expansive chordal progressions and crisp vocal production. The vocal melodies are catchy and contain hooks that are reminiscent of pop artists like Carly Rae Jepsen. 'Somebody Else' is a reflective track that goes deep into the thoughts of the persona; with the underlying feeling of longing saturating the soft backing accompaniment.

'Ego', the lead single from the EP, has a quirky introduction and an incredibly catchy bass rhythm that adds momentum leading into the final track 'Let it Go'. The final track is my favourite song from the EP; there is a sense of acceptance and a focus on self-worth after a period of heartbreak. The EP has a cyclical form and a comforting message that despite the pain of heartbreak; you will recover and learn to love again. 'MISS REGENT' contains songs showcasing pop perfection in its lyricism and catchy melodic hooks and is a fantastic debut.
