Monelise is back with her brand new single 'Silver Lake', an atmospheric song that features an ethereal soundscape leaving the listener wandering in a whimsical setting.
"If I could choose my world
I’d stay with you forever
The mystery unfolds
As we cross over"
What I love about Monelise's music is her talent for painting visuals through her lyrics, throughout 'Silver Lake' the use of vivid imagery helps accentuate the folkloric features explored throughout the track. The drone of the cello accompanied by the orchestral percussion elevates the instrumentation making this a song that could easily feature as part of a major film soundtrack. The song builds upon the new production style featured in 'Insane' and 'Sliding Worlds', with the vocals reminiscent of tracks found on Monelise's album Hauntology. The crashing chords and soaring vocals leave the listener in a dream-like state as we imagine the persona grieving by the silver lake that contains the spirit of her lost lover. Overall, this is a fantastic single that captures the sense of wonder that is present throughout Monelise's discography. Check out 'Silver Lake' in the link above and on my Spotify reviews playlist.
"The song is about a woman who grieves the loss of her lost lover and goes to the mystical banks of Silver Lake for some solace. As she stands there she sees his spirit floating above the water, and at first, she thinks he is beckoning her to come closer because they can still be reunited. The lake is the liminal space separating earth (where she is) from afterlife (where he is). As she wades into the water to try to reach him she realises that she can drown if she loses herself too much in her memories and lost dreams. In the latter half of the song they both summon all their energy to be able to connect one last time before he has to leave her ("our eyes are all aglow, our bodies finally meet"). As they touch one last time, the "mystery" (what happens after death?) is revealed to her and she realises that they will one day be reunited. As his spirit fades she understands that she can always come to the banks of silver lake to connect with him in spirit. Although, the end is a bit of a cliffhanger - "Now we're crossing over..." - did she stay at the lake or follow him into the afterlife?"- Monelise
