'A Reckoning' is Kimbra's fourth studio album; an introspective and deeply personal collection of songs that sees the New Zealand musician delve into themes related to pain, contemplation and being defiant against all challenges.
It was difficult to predict what 'A Reckoning' would sound like prior to its release. The versatility of the lead singles indicated that this project would be exploring a broad variety of genres and demonstrate Kimbra's strength as a producer. The album sonically draws similarities to Kimbra's 'Golden Echo' album, with its bold electronic production and interesting melodic structure making this an experimental album that showcases her strength as a songwriter and producer. Singles including 'the way we were' and 'save me' evoke a sense of vulnerability, with the personal lyricism inviting the listener to empathise and relate to the tracks. For fans of Kimbra this album is an eclectic collection of songs that makes the five year wait completely worth it, but it is also a good introduction for listeners who may not be familiar with her work.
