'Are You Haunted?' is the new album from Australian art-rock band, Methyl Ethel, fronted by multi-instrumentalist Jake Webb. I first learned about Methyl Ethel's music late one night on the radio, during the promotion of their single 'Ubu'. Since then, I have been following the band's music and have loved their subsequent releases and performances.
Their new album 'Are You Haunted?' delves into a broader range of sounds, with Webb creating catchy hooks throughout the album that are accompanied by a plethora of synth instrumentation. The collaboration with fellow Australian musician Stella Donnelly is a fantastic track with two individuals conversing about finding proof in the ambiguous.
Tracks like 'Something to Worry About' marks a change in the style of production from Methyl Ethel's previous work. The instrumentation in 'Are You Haunted?' is expansive and reflects the growth in Webb's artistry. 'Something to Worry About' is personally one of my favourite tracks on the album; the melody slowly lulls you in and transitions into the energetic 'Neon Cheap'. 'Are You Haunted?' has moments of tranquillity that are dispersed throughout the album, providing a range of textures in the instrumentation from psychedelic synths to a stripped-back acoustic piano. If you haven't heard of Methyl Ethel then I would highly recommend listening to this album. It is by far my favourite album of 2022.
