Fyfe (Paul Dixon, formerly David's Lyre) is a singer/songwriter/producer based in London. His song 'Belong' is a collaboration with New Zealand singer Kimbra that features on his album 'The Space Between' released back in 2017.
"I lost myself in endless streets
With headlights glaring back at me
I promise you it’s not defeat
It’s just that now I want to be
I want to belong"
'Belong' was the first Fyfe song I encountered, having been a fan of Kimbra since her collaboration with Gotye.
Fyfe's music blends experimental electronic pop with indie rock making his sound very unique and quirky. The track begins with a pulsing synth chord and offbeat bass rhythm that nicely accompanies the slow walking pace of the drums. I like how the instrumental is minimal but feels spacious, with the vocals alternating in the verses.
The chorus sees Fyfe and Kimbra join forces, with the main melody being accompanied by harmonies that make the song sound like a conversation between two individuals. It explores the feeling of longing and the need to be with someone in one fixed space, which is a theme that runs throughout the album. The music video features Fyfe being surrounded by bodies that whirl and morph into disfigured shapes that dance in swirling colours mirroring the lyrics "Don’t you know we're physical and we’re spiritual?".
This track combines everything I admire about Fyfe and Kimbra's music; they continuously experiment with sounds and produce music that they love. I hope there is a new Fyfe album on the way until then I will be playing 'The Space Between' on repeat.
