'Colour Me Violet' by Rachel Walker Mason (EP Review)

Written alongside long-time collaborator Nina Sundstrom, and produced by Bare Wall Studios and Sundstrom, 'Colour Me Violet' is the latest EP from Bristol-based singer-songwriter Rachel Walker Mason. The EP paints an intimate story of romance with the lyricism showcasing Rachel Walker Mason's talent for song writing and crafting cohesive tracks that immerse the listener.

'Magpie Heart' is a warm introduction to 'Colour Me Violet', with Rachel Walker Mason's soothing vocals gently guiding the listener accompanied by softly strummed guitar. The minimalistic production suits the delicate nature of the lyricism, allowing the vocals to be at the forefront of the track, giving space for the listener to immerse themselves within the narrative. The second track, 'Pieces of You' brings gentle percussive instrumentation with heavier backing harmonies that compliment the main vocals. This gradual transition between tracks is subtle but cleverly ties the songs together as one story, bringing a sense of cohesiveness to the EP. The final track 'Grey Man' references the title of the EP, and is a haunting track that could feature in an indie film. Rachel Walker Mason's EP, 'Colour Me Violet' is a body of work that showcases storytelling lyricism that makes the three tracks tie together as one story. A story about love, reflection and letting go of the past.
