'DSTM' by ONE OR EIGHT

Writer: KeikoKeiko

ONE OR EIGHT is a Japanese dance-vocal group that has recently risen to prominence, captivating audiences with their sharp choreography and fresh hip-hop production. Their collaborative single 'Kawasaki,' featuring rapper Big Sean, gained significant attention last year, propelling the group into the global spotlight. This upbeat track showcases the fusion of J-pop and international hip-hop, allowing ONE OR EIGHT to reach a diverse and expanding international fanbase.

Their latest single, 'DTSM,' creatively interpolates iconic elements from Rihanna's hit "Please Don't Stop the Music" and incorporates Michael Jackson's iconic chant, which draws inspiration from Manu Dibango's influential 1972 song "Soul Makossa." This hybrid composition combines familiar samples and contemporary interpolations, blending nostalgia with modern flair. ONE OR EIGHT's have incorporated their own rapped verses adding a fresh spin that infuses the beats with their charismatic energy and sharp choreography.

I would say that the group distinctly sets themselves apart as a J-pop group, with their polished visuals and almost blockbuster music videos. Their multilingual songs not only enhance their appeal but also reflect an understanding of wanting to connect with a broader global audience. Personally, I am particularly drawn to their take on classic 2000s tracks, it showcases a nostalgic vibe that has been gaining traction in the J-pop genre. This trend can also be seen in the works of artists like Psychic Fever, whose recent releases echo the essence of that decade. This blend of past influences and contemporary sounds is one of the elements that I truly love about J-pop, making it an incredibly exciting genre!
