Kimbra (Kimbra Lee Johnson) is a singer-songwriter, musician and producer from New Zealand. The artist shot to fame after featuring on 'Somebody That I Used To Know' the Grammy award-winning song by Australian artist Gotye. Many people may not know that Kimbra has an incredible discography of her own, with three albums that display her experimental and innovative style that never fails to push the boundaries of musical genre. I have been a fan of Kimbra's since listening to her debut album, 'Vows'; I think she is an underrated musician who is an incredibly influential figure for women in music. Here are some of my favourite Kimbra songs that I think you should check out!
'Come Into My Head' taken from Kimbra's debut album 'Vows'
With interchangeable vocal techniques and a bold brass accompaniment, this track is a colourful and rich display of Kimbra's versatility as an artist. The jazz, blues, pop and alt-rock sounds all make up the ingredients for this punchy single mirrored by an equally bold music video.
'90's Music' taken from Kimbra's second album 'The Golden Echo'
This track once again showcases Kimbra's fascination with mixing different genres to create something quirky and intriguing for the listener. What I love about 'The Golden Echo' is the variety in sounds and textures. There is nothing more experimental than this single.
'Top of the World' taken from Kimbra's latest album 'Primal Heart'
This album is a collection of songs that explores heartbreak, self-growth and working out one's place in a world that is constantly changing. 'Top of the World' is powerful and uses vocals to convey a haunting chant, reminiscent of the techniques cemented by artists like Kate Bush.
If you haven't listened to Kimbra's music, then I would highly recommend checking out the links above. You can also hear the tracks on my 'Introducing' playlist (link in bio).
