RHODES aka David Rhodes is a British singer-songwriter from Hertfordshire, UK. Having released his debut album [Wishes] back in 2015, the musician has since gone on to collaborate with Kygo, Birdy and has most recently released an EP titled [I'm Not Ok].
I was introduced to RHODES' music during a long-haul flight and was immediately captivated by his voice and ambient sound. The first song I ever heard was [You & I], a delicate track that slowly unravels as the persona tries to find hope in separation. What I love about RHODES' music is the meditative nature of his songs. Each track tells a different story with hidden meanings saturated in the lyrics which are full of depth and symbolism.
Alongside his albums, RHODES has collaborated with other ambient artists like Birdy. [Let It All Go] released back in 2015, features the two singers walking across a purple-barren landscape with the muffled piano chords and clear vocals conveying feelings of loss and heartbreak. If you are a fan of indie-folk music then I think you will love this collaboration.
His most recent work featuring singles [Love You Sober] and [I'm Not Ok] takes more of a personal dive into the singer-songwriter's life. The honesty and tone of the lyricism can be identified in the titles, with [Love You Sober] displaying some of RHODES' most tender and reflective writing.
"I was just trying to drink the pain away, not drown myself
I'm sorry I've been gone so long"
The atmospheric instrumental is mirrored in the stark black and white music video that delves deep into the psyche of the persona. If like me, you love to read lyrics and explore the hidden meanings behind songs then I think you will love RHODES' musical style.
