'Missing Something' by Enfers

'Missing Something' is the brand new single from Leeds-based indie-band, Enfers. Their debut EP, 'Come When They Call Labour', captured the band's early formation and journey with clever arrangements that combined catchy pop melodies with indie-rock riffs. It solidified the band's place within the Leeds music scene and remains my favourite EP to emerge from the days of the pandemic.

From 'Heaven In A Wild Flower' (which has a similar vibe to Queen) to the huge anthemic chorus of 'Awake', the band have slowly built themselves up to be one of the most exciting upcoming bands in the UK. Since the release of their debut EP, the band have gone on to release 'Infants' (2022) and recently two new singles 'Keep On' and 'Shedsong'.

Their brand new single 'Missing Something' is a track with an intriguing concept that explores being indecisive and having self-sabotaging behaviour when it comes to relationships. Despite being written as two separate tracks, the single feels cohesive and demonstrates the band's knack for crafting melodies and playful hooks that capture the tone of the light-hearted lyrics. The lyrics are unapologetically blunt and at times reminded me of the frank humour of The Smiths, especially the lyric 'And all that's going on in my mind, is I like you but I'd love to kick your friend in the eye.' It's this humour and nonchalant approach to the lyrics that makes the single stand out as one of my favourite releases by the band so far.

About the song: Sam Donley (vocalist-Enfers: pictured right)

"Missing Something is a light, upbeat summer tune with flavours of country and indie-pop. The song is basically a hybrid of two songs that we'd had for a while which we decided to stitch together. I started writing the verses about 5 years ago after seeing an episode of Friends where Chandler realises he's going to end up alone because for every girl he went out with he'd find some trivial reason not to be with them (I think one of the jokes was that the girl had an overly large head)  for whatever reason I liked this idea so that's where the lyrics originally came from. I wrote the chorus quite a bit later but it seemed to fit with what the verses were doing. It's really just one of those songs we like to do every now and then where there's not really anything clever about it, we just wanted to do a short, catchy pop tune."
