'Movements' by Sarah Holburn

Sarah Holburn's new album, 'Movements', is a captivating exploration of the human experience and marks the singer-songwriter's return to solo music after ten years of being in various bands.

I first discovered Sarah's music when she was the co-lead singer and songwriter of the indie band, in earnest. After starting my blog during the pandemic, they were the first band I interviewed and featured on my page. Now four years later, I was thrilled to receive an email from Sarah, who sent me her new solo album 'Movements'. The album consists of ten tracks that capture the highs and lows of life, with deeply personal lyrics that tell a compelling story. This album reads like a diary and the personal touch of having Sarah's dad engineer the tracks, adds a deeply sentimental quality to the project that captures the past decade. Throughout the album, Holburn's delicate vocals glide with the acoustic accompaniment, adding a nostalgic, late summer feel to the songs. The tracks delve into themes of regret, reflection, and renewal, forming a cohesive narrative that evolves throughout the album.

The instrumental break of 'Reprise' acts as a poignant transition, bridging the emotional journey of the first and second halves of the album. The initial tracks portray a deep sense of contemplation and inner turmoil, while the latter half portrays an individual who bravely confronts their past, ultimately progressing towards the 'Finale,' where there is a cathartic release and a profound sense of acceptance. The song "Pardonner" is my personal favorite from the album. It tells a poignant story of losing someone who was once a source of comfort and security, and the emotional journey of coming to terms with this loss and dealing with the aftermath. The lyrics and melody beautifully convey the heartbreak and resilience of the persona as they go back and forth, contemplating the past. 'Movements' is an incredible album and one you need to listen to over and over again to fully appreciate the intricacies of the lyrics.
