'Pluma' by Philip Jonathan (EP Review)

'Pluma' is the debut EP from Northumberland based folk musician Philip Jonathan. This seven-track EP features lead singles 'Seafront' and 'Before the Dawn' alongside some previously unreleased tracks that explore themes related to finding hope amongst the mundane.

'Pluma' combines cinematic soundscapes with gentle string accompaniment, to build a sensory environment for the listener to immerse themselves in the lyrics and accompanying instrumental. Jonathan's vocals soar throughout the EP adding depth to the expansive soundscapes present in tracks like 'Seafront' and 'Chokehold'.

'Pluma' contains introspective lyricism, tackling themes ranging from grief and loss to relationships and finding hope within everyday life. These themes are all delicately wrapped in an ambient backdrop with Jonathan gradually building layers in the bridge of his songs to fully immerse and connect with the listener. 'I, Hope' is an example of Jonathan's finest work, a meditative track that showcases storytelling lyricism, drawing influence from other cinematic folk artists like Aurora.

From start to finish, 'Pluma' is an incredible debut EP that places Philip Jonathan as one of the most exciting ambient folk artists in the UK. This EP has so much depth and character, I would highly recommend checking it out if you are a fan of ambient folk and cinematic soundtracks.
