'Songs from Home' by Harry Johnson

'Songs from Home' (extended version) comes from musician Harry Johnson, who wrote and produced this album during lockdown.

The EP commences with an almost eerie cassette tape introduction flowing into 'give me a minute' a track that features luscious strummed chords accompanied by Johnson's warm vocals. It is comforting and nicely introduces the listener to the tones that are explored throughout the album. 'Songs from Home' has a fragmentary structure as if the listener is placed in the mind of the persona who tracks their emotions through the tracks. 'i don't think i love you' is a heart-breaking tale of falling out of love and the fear of losing that person. This track is my favourite from the album; structurally, the track is left on a slight cliffhanger and captures some incredibly raw songwriting that will connect with many listeners. 'could you just lie?' is the perfect response to 'i don't think i love you', creating dialogue in the album that provides different perspectives and displays Johnson's empathetic writing.

'you didn't wanna know me' features slightly distorted vocals and production that underscores the turmoil present within the lyrics. It is a sombre track but has an expansive chorus that feels hopeful providing clarity to the persona who has been stumbling through their thoughts. 'Somebody Like You' collectively ties the themes examined throughout the album, a triumphant conclusion to a deep and thoughtful project. The additional demos on the extended album further showcase the raw songwriting displayed in the first half of the album but are fantastic standalone tracks. 'Songs from Home' feels intimate and invites the listener to experience the introspective thoughts of the persona. It is an incredible album that captures the various feelings many felt during lockdown, a year of instability and fear of the unknown.
