miida is a solo project by Japanese singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Mizuki Masuda. Mizuki Masuda was the composer and guitarist of Japanese alt-rock band Negoto that disbanded in 2019, with each member pursuing their independent projects. Released under the same name as its mini-album; 'utopia' was written, arranged and produced by Masuda.
'utopia' takes a minimalist approach with its laid back lo-fi beats and limited use of instruments, that adds to the song's overall mellow charm. The introduction begins with a soft synth bassline slowly layered with percussion and the xylophone riff that features throughout the song. Masuda's delicate vocals guide the listener through the verses, with added harmonies in the chorus creating a warm summery tone that makes a bright soundscape, reflected in the track's accompanying music video. The song explores the hesitancy of falling in love, and the reluctance to express feelings towards the desired individual. There is something so innocent and relatable in Masuda's lyricism as a songwriter; she doesn't try to shy away from the narrative but rather expresses her candid thoughts making her music a relatable story. The lyrics combined with the mellow nature of the track makes 'utopia' a song that the listener can easily relate to their own experiences, making this an enjoyable story about the clumsy process of falling in love.
