'Zoo Eyes' by Aldous Harding

Aldous Harding is a singer/songwriter from New Zealand, her song 'Zoo Eyes' features on her album 'Designer' which is out now on 4AD/Flying Nun. I first heard about Aldous Harding when I watched her performance of 'Horizon' on Jools Holland. Her performance was utterly mesmerizing and raw with emotion, displaying Harding's talent as a songwriter who can convey stories through stripped-back instrumentals.

"Zoo eyes
Ask for me and you shall receive
Opulent fair
All rain is beads
That drain to where the mother shell meets the sea"

The minimalistic instrumental featured throughout the song is delicate with Harding's brilliant lyricism reading like poetry. The transitions between low hushed vocals in the verses and high crystal clear vocals in the chorus creates a nice texture in the melody. The song develops its character throughout with the wind instruments floating above the folk guitar and Harding's vocals. The visuals for 'Zoo Eyes' excellently captures the eccentric nature of the song's composition, with Aldous embodying different quirky characters.
