'スターマイン' and 'マイガール' by Da-iCE

Japanese dance-vocal group Da-iCE are back with two new singles titled 'スターマイン/Star Mine' and 'マイガール/My Girl' falling under the collective 'イマ/Ima'. I have been listening and following the group's releases since the end of 2019 and one thing that separates Da-iCE from other groups is the versatility in their discography and ambition to create music that transgresses genres but maintains danceability.

'Star Mine' takes Latin influences with acoustic guitar and blend of rapped/sung verses adding texture to the instrumental. Ohno's rapped verses see the group successfully experiment with melodic structure adding strength to the chorus that features the dual vocal line, once again showcasing why Da-iCE are known for their powerful vocalists. In contrast, 'My Girl' follows a similar tone to their single 'Clap and Clap' which featured on their latest album 'REVERSi'. Both songs are co-written by the group's leader Taiki Kudo (Star Mine) and vocalist Sota Hanamura (My Girl), both of whom have previously written and produced tracks for Da-iCE. 'My Girl' is a colourful and warm display of catchy hooks and fusion inspired accompaniment. The contrast between 'Star Mine' and 'My Girl' suggests that the group are now venturing into a new chapter, one that will celebrate their past whilst continuing to evolve. Overall, it looks like the Da-iCE will keep on rolling and they show no signs of slowing down. Check out 'Star Mine' and My Girl' in the links above or hear the tracks in full on my Spotify Reviews Playlist.
